Flying to the Bass,
Charcoal, pastel and coloured pencil on paper, 56 cm x 76 cm
This was the original drawing I made which went on to inspire my screen print Gannet Flight. It was a cold day on the East Lothian coast just west of the Bass Rock. I am always looking for birds in the landscape and on particular day in spring 2021, the movement I was spying was mainly gannets foraging for nest material on the water and then flying it back in the direction of the Bass. For me, the Gannet is a herald of spring - as you start to see more on the water, you know that the Bass is filling up with birds again for a noisy breeding season - wonderful!
