Gannets over the Atlantic

Gannets over the Atlantic

Gannets over the Atlantic,

categories: sea; island, seabird
Winner of the William J Macaulay / Scottish Gallery Award for an Outstanding Work in any Category at the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition 2021 The piece was made after a once-in-a-lifetime sailing trip to St Kilda. There were fresh challenges to be had drawing from a boat. Mostly I was struck by the vastness of the ocean around the boat, striving to find structures and interest to counter the empty space. Gannets over the Atlantic is inspired by the view to the Boreray Stacks as we sailed towards them. Worked up from sketches made at the time this large mixed media work seeks to evoke the particular feeling of being on the Atlantic surrounded by gannets.
